Coffee People
Rising before light
Working till night
Never raising a complaint
Endless capacity to be patient
Coffee People
Dark stains left under nails
Filling pail after pail
With this fruit of the earth
In the place of its birth
Coffee People
Breathing deeply of the rich smell
Ah yes, remembering so well
That same smell welcoming them into the world
The bean treasured like a dark pearl
Coffee People
Hours go by
Night draws nigh
Pockets far from full
And still they smile
Coffee People
The journey home is long
But from their lips rises a song
And as they arrive to their destination
That rich aroma awakens sensation
Coffee People
Around the hot coals they gather
Just happy to be together
This steaming black gold
Filling their very souls.
And then there’s Coffee people
across the border...
Who stand in line
ready to order
in their nice
skirts
suits
and ties
woke up to a morning
merely hoping to survive.
Coffee people...
With their closed off expressions
remain so see through
as they head towards hated
destinations.
Coffee people...
Restless hearts
looking to make that fast
getaway
but remain stuck
dazed in the wonder as to what it is
that makes them stay.
Coffee people...
Whose small fortunes spent
on things guaranteed to
lead them towards Zen
Does not work and off they go
Determined to find new ways
To ease their hurts from a true lack
of self worth.
Coffee People...
compare and contrast
lives at opposite levels of
economic status
and the fact is...
us rich folks are the saddest.
